Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq casts doubt on US role in Death Squad scandal: “Why do they minimize their scope when disclosing them, and then do nothing to stop them?”
In a statement dated 17 February 2006, the Association of Muslim Scholars of Iraq, the supreme religious authority for Sunnis in the country noted that American General Joseph Peterson who had been in charge of training the Iraqi puppet police had reported that the US military had proof that the puppet “Iraqi Interior Ministry” had set up a death squad and that 22 men in it had been appointed by the “Ministry” as members of external patrols.
The Association responded to this American admission by saying, first of all that the matter was much bigger than the US General had described, both in terms of quantity and quality. The Association said that the General’s statement “to the extent that it condemns the [puppet] “Interior Ministry” raises questions and doubts about what the US stance on the matter implies, since it minimizes the matter and presents it in such limited numbers. This is just what they did in the Abu Ghurayb scandal when they only punished a number of their soldiers, saying that this behavior was a matter of individuals’ comportment even though it was not so, as is now well known.”
The Association said, “There is also another question as to why the occupation forces merely disclose the crimes without doing anything at least to prevent more of them from happening The scandal of the al-Jadiriyah hideout and the an-Nusur Center already surfaced and in those cases the US Ambassador in Baghdad accused the [puppet] “Interior Ministry” of [Shi‘i] sectarianism, but that was all they did, they did nothing else. In fact, afterward, they freed up those agencies so that they could commit more crimes.”
“The Association of Muslim Scholars, as it condemns the sectarian cleansing that is taking place on the territory of Iraq holds both the occupation force and the [puppet] state agencies responsible, sensing joint cooperation in this matter between the occupation and the security agencies. This is producing yet another new scandal to be added to the record of the occupation, following those of Abu Ghurayb and others.
The Association called for the formation of “neutral international commissions”to investigate this matter, and appealed to the United Nations “to shoulder the responsibility and follow up on this case.”
Under pressure from massive media reporting, puppet regime in Baghdad forms special committee to investigate reports of secret prison, death squads, abduction, torture, and murder by puppet regime security agencies and Badr Brigade militia.
In a dispatch posted at 5:30pm Mecca time Saturday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that following revelations in the press that another secret prison run by the pro-American Shi‘i sectarian Badr Brigades and the puppet “Iraqi Interior Ministry Shock Troops (Maghawir)” had been discovered, the US-installed puppet “Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister” ‘Abd al-Mutlak al-Jabburi announced that a special committee had been formed to investigate the reports.
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that al-Jabburi told a press conference in the area of the Republican Palace in Baghdad – the so-called “Green Zone” where the US has set up the headquarters of its occupation regime in the country – that a “Ministerial Committee” made up of four official agencies, one of them being the puppet “Human Rights Ministry” had been formed to investigate the reports of the secret prison. The committee was also to investigate the death squads run by puppet security agencies and reports of abuse and torture.
Suspicions about the genuine intentions of the committee were immediately raised when al-Jabburi cast doubt upon the media reports of the prison, death squads, and torture saying that many security men who had spoken to the press had provided “inaccurate” information. Al-Jabburi said that those men frequently declined to be identified and alleged that the reason for that was the quality of their information rather than the threat of torture and death.
