In a dispatch posted at 9:30pm Makkah time Monday night, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the fighting in the city that had started during the afternoon had finally fallen silent.
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported al-Hajj Muhammad al-‘Assafi, a Resistance fighter, as saying that in the course of the day’s combat, two US Humvees were destroyed, one armored Humvee was disabled, and more than ten American troops were killed or wounded.
Al-‘Assafi told Mafkarat al-Islam:
“The battle was initiated by the Iraqi Resistance, which was able to spring a well-planned ambush on a US column by planting bombs in the path of the column in order to bring it to a halt. The column did stop, in fact, and Mujahidin fighters charged it, firing light and medium weapons and rocket launchers. The attack killed or wounded more than 10 troops and destroyed two Humvees and disabled one armored Humvee.”
Al-‘Assafi confirmed the Mafkarat al-Islam report that four Resistance fighters had been killed in the fighting. He noted that it was the American helicopters that rescued the American troops at the last minute, “if not for them we would have finished them off.”
Regarding the American attack on the ‘Urwah ibn az-Zubayr Mosque, al-‘Assafi said, “I don’t know why they attacked it, since it’s a long way from where the fighting was going on, other than that it was their Crusader hatred.”
Al-‘Assafi also confirmed that three Resistance organizations had taken part in the ambush: the Islamic Army the Army of the Conquerors and the al-Qa‘idah Organization in the Land of the Two Rivers. He noted that the agreement between the Jihadi organizations is valid throughout all of Iraq, not only in al-Anbar Province, and that it provides for joint cooperation between all the Resistance organizations during fighting and fierce battles that require powerful support in order for the fight against the occupation to continue.
