In a dispatch posted at 6:33pm Baghdad time Monday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that Iraqi army forces arrested the “Finance Minister” of the so-called “Islamic State of Iraq” the front group of the al-Qa‘idah fundamentalist organization.
Yaqen reported a source in the Iraqi Interior Ministry, who asked not to be identified, as saying that the arrest of Wafir Hasan ‘Alwan al-Hadithi, an al-Qa‘idah activist, took place during raids in the an-Nasr wa-as-Salam area of Abu Ghruayb, 30km west of Baghdad after noon on Monday.
The “Islamic State of Iraq” was declared in October 2006 by about seven Islamist organizations operating in Iraq, the leader of which is al-Qa‘idah in the Land of the Two Rivers. The head of the so-called “Islamic State” is the al-Qa ‘idah leader in Iraq known as Abu ‘Umar al-Baghdadi.

In its first day it reportedly succeeded in capturing weapons that had been held by the anti-occupation forces in the area, some of them of Iranian manufacture. A number of individuals were also arrested in the raids.
Yaqen reported witnesses as saying Monday that massive forces advanced on villages around Khan Bani Sa‘d, including the villages of al-Karamah, as-Sa‘adah, ash-Shayma’. The Americans and their Iraqi regime allies immediately cut off the villages from the outside world and then began searching all vehicles and checking the identities of local civilians residents.
A source in the Diyala Province regime who refused to be identified told Yaqen that a number of commanders of special units with ties to Iran had been arrested on this, the first day of the offensive.
The US and its Iraqi regime allies launched this latest offensive against the anti-occupation Jaysh al-Mahdi in Diyala Province, at a time when the incidents of attacks apparently carried out by al-Qa ‘idah – a deadly enemy of the Jaysh al-Mahdi – were on the rise. On Monday a woman believed to belong to al-Qa‘idah, who was wearing an explosive belt, blew herself up in Ba‘qubah, the capital of Diyala Province, 65km northeast of Baghdad.
Since March, the US-backed Iraqi regime has been actively engaged in an offensive against the anti-occupation Sadr Movement and its armed wing, the Jaysh al-Mahdi militia, in what is believed to be preparation for an American attack on Iran.
