Health Department official survives assassination attempt near Tikrit.

In a dispatch posted at 11:30am Baghdad time Tuesday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a bomb exploded by the motorcade of Dr. Khalid Burhan, Deputy Director for Disease Prevention of the Health Department of Salah ad-Din Province, in an attack that took place near Tikrit, 180km north of Baghdad.

Yaqen reported a source in the provincial police as saying that the blast slightly wounded Dr. Burhan.  Six of his companions were also wounded in the attack, and some of them were taken to hospital for treatment.

Samarra’.

“Awakening” soldier kills companion, wounds four others in shooting spree.

In a dispatch posted at 2:45pm Baghdad time Tuesday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a member of the tribal “Awakening” police in Samarra’, 120km north of Baghdad, opened fire on one of his fellow “Awakening” policemen, in an incident that left one person dead and four others wounded, two of them severely.

Yaqen reported a source in the regime as saying that the perpetrator of the attack was armed with an AK-47 Kalashnikov assault rifle, which he pointed at one of his companions and opened fire.  Preliminary investigation revealed that the shooting was accidental and that no personal differences were involved.  The discharge of the weapon was blamed on lack of control and error.

Companions of the perpetrator, however, said that nervous tension and nervous breakdown caused the man to lose his senses and open fire indiscriminately.

Diyala Province.

Ba‘qubah.

“Awakening” policemen wounded in bombings near Ba‘qubah Tuesday.

In a dispatch posted at 10:30pm Baghdad time Tuesday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a bomb and a car bomb exploded near a headquarters of the tribal “Awakening” police to the west of Ba‘qubah, 65km northeast of Baghdad

Yaqen reported that the blasts wounded four persons, two of them members of the “Awakening.”

The bomb, which had been hidden in a trash container went off near the “Awakening” headquarters in the al-Mu‘allimin neighborhood Tuesday, 7km west of Ba‘qubah, proper.  That blast wounded two members of the “Awakeing.”  Security forces then arrived on the scene where they spotted a suspicious car in a residential area 15 meters away from the scene of the first blast.  The security men cleared the area and 15 minutes later, the car – which had also been packed with explosives – blew up.  One “Awakening” policeman was wounded by flying shrapnel from that explosion, which also inflicted material damage on residences in the area.

As-Sa‘diyah.

Tractor bomb kills five in as-Sa‘diyah.

In a dispatch posted at 10:20am Baghdad time Tuesday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a suicide bomber drove an explosives- near a security post guarded by members of the tribal “Awakening” police in a village in the as-Sa‘diyah area, 115km northeast of Baghdad and blew himself and his vehicle up.

Yaqen reported a source in the Diyala Province government as saying that the driver of the tractor, loaded with watermelons for cover, stopped suddenly near the security post at the entrance to the village of al-Ways, 11km east of as-Sa‘diyah, on Monday night. Tribal “Awakening” policemen approached the driver, who detonated his charges at that time.

The source reported that the explosives packed in the tractor under the watermelons produced a powerful-enough blast to kill five people, four of them “Awakening” policemen.  Four other “Awakening” policemen were wounded in the attack.

The al-Qa‘idah organization has been active in Diyala Province in recent weeks, carrying out suicide bombings targeted on Iraqi regime forces.

At-Ta’mim/Kirkuk Province.

Kirkuk.

Judge survives assassination attempt in Kirkuk Tuesday.

In a dispatch posted at 4:40pm Baghdad time Tuesday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a bomb exploded by the car carrying Judge Muhammad Farhan, a judge at the Kirkuk Court of Law in the al-Wasiti neighborhood of the city, located 250km north of Baghdad on Tuesday.

Yaqen reported Brigadier General Sarhad Qadir as saying that Judge Farhan survived the attempted assassination.

Bomb targets police patrol in Kirkuk.

In a dispatch posted at 4:40pm Baghdad time Tuesday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a bomb had exploded in the al-‘Urubah neighborhood of southern Kirkuk, 250km north of Baghdad, on Tuesday.

Yaqen reported the Director of the Police in Kirkuk, Brigadier General Sarhad Qadir as saying that the target of the blast was a police patrol, but that the explosion had inflicted no losses or casualties.

Al-Mawsil.

Bomb wounds two policemen in al-Mawsil Tuesday.

In a dispatch posted at 5:05pm Baghdad time Tuesday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that a bomb exploded by a police patrol in eastern al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad on Tuesday.

Yaqen reported a source in the al-Mawsil police as saying that the blast, in the al-Mithaq neighborhood of the Nimrud district wounded two policemen.  Government troops then surrounded the area and the two injured men were taken to hospital for treatment.

Since 10 May, the US and its Iraqi regime allies have been waging an offensive against the al-Qa‘idah organization in al-Mawsil and surrounding Ninwa Province.

Gunmen open fire on checkpoint in western al-Mawsil Tuesday, causing no casualties.

In a dispatch posted at 1:55pm Baghdad time Tuesday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that gunmen attacked a checkpoint to the west of al-Mawsil, 420km northwest of Baghdad, on Tuesday.

Yaqen reported a source in the police as saying that men equipped with light and medium arms opened fire on the checkpoint in the al-Bursah section of the city.  No casualties were reported.  The gunmen fled the scene, also without having sustained casualties.  The same checkpoint had been the target of a suicide belt bomber attack some time ago.

Tall ‘Afar.

Four dead, five wounded as Turkoman tribes battle over water near Tall ‘Afar.

In a dispatch posted at 11:05am Baghdad time Tuesday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that four people were killed and five more wounded in clashes between two rival Turkoman tribes in the Tall ‘Afar area, 70km west of al-Mawsil in northern Iraq.

Yaqen reported a source in the government in Ninwa Province as saying that the battle broke out between the al-Julagh and al-Bizzi Turkoman tribes in the Tall ‘Afar area, prompting intervention by local police and government troops.  In all, three policemen and one Julagh tribesman were killed.  Two other policemen and three members of the rival al-Bizzi tribe were wounded in the melee.

Major General Najm ‘Abdallah al-Jabburi, governor of the Tall ‘Afar district, declared that a difference arose between two Turkoman tribes over water, but added that the dispute had political connotations.
