Baghdad.

US forces arrest nine gunmen linked to Iran.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 10:10pm Tuesday night Beijing time (5:10pm in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that the US military had announced that its troops had arrested nine gunmen who belong to the Hizballah Brigades, an armed organization with ties to Iran.  The arrests took place in the Sunni Baghdad district of al-A‘zamiyah, the US announcement said.

Xinhua reported the American communiqué as saying that the arrests were the result of operations carried out in al-A‘zamiyah on Monday evening and Tuesday morning.  The American forces announced that the Hizballah Brigades receive financial and logistical support as well as funds and weapons – including bombs, rockets, and mortar rounds – from Iran and receive guidance from the Iranian al-Quds Brigades, which, in turn, are subordinated to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Ba‘qubah.

Belt bomber targets motorcade in Ba‘qubah Tuesday morning.

In a dispatch posted on its Arabic website at 6:35pm Tuesday afternoon Beijing time (1:35pm in Baghdad), the Xinhua News Agency reported that a man wearing an explosive belt blew himself up by the motorcade of Ra‘d Mullah Jawad, Governor of Diyala Province, as he was coming out of the provincial government building in Ba‘qubah, 65km northeast of Baghdad before noon on Tuesday.

Xinhua reported a source in the Iraqi police as saying that three people were killed and three others wounded in the suicide bombing.  Several cars in the motorcade were damaged, but Governor Jawad was not hurt.

Following the attack, Iraqi authorities imposed a curfew on the city of Ba‘qubah, just a day after the regime declared the end of its two-week operation against al-Qa‘idah – a group known for its suicide bombings.
